D1 week 9 review - 2 weeks to go before the Split
Jan 04, 2019
Back before Wallingford, there was Waynesborough and Philly Cricket battling it out for a spot for the title or the regular season championship. Last year was no different as Waynesborough made their way to the finals, while P-Cricket pulled off a huge upset of Wallingford in the semi-final match. The two battled it out in the finals in which WCC ended up the victor. For 10 of the past 11 years, one or both of these squads was in the play-off finals. This match up pitted the #2 and #3 teams with WCC starting off the night with a 2-point edge for the season but they have yet to play the undefeated Wallingford squad. First out on the courts featured Rexford and Adamson on court 4 against Parisi and Veale. After 1 hour and numerous set points earned by each squad, the PCK squad won the first in a tie-breaker. The second set was much like the first with the PCK squad taking down a 7-5 set. The third set was finished in just shy of the three-hour mark, with the WCC squad taking down the third. Court 2 was also up and Scotty and Doug took all three sets over Talbot and Gelrod. Hank the Tank and Studsy took the court an hour after court 4 started and finished about 45 minutes before they got off taking all three sets over Ritesh and Tom. Court 1 featured the #1 and #2 ranked players in MAPTA squaring off against each other. Falatek and McDonald are looking to go undefeated this season and were underdogs according to Sherlock against HOF’er McAvoy and Vlatko. V and M took down the first set and in an epic battle, the underdogs from PCK won sets 2 and 3 and secured a point for the evening.

Reacting to their current win streak, Captain McGrath responded, “This is not news to me or anyone on this squad. We have some unfinished business to handle from last year and now that our travel and vacation calendars are in sync, we fully expect to win 18 matches this year and take home the cup.” Wally World hosted Concord this week and as expected took all 4 courts. With the win, they have opened up a 2-point margin on the second place WCC and have successfully won over 80% of their courts this season. Concord’s 6 points has them in 10th place and they have a 3-point deficit to get out of the danger zone with Martins Dam and Merion left to play before the split.

A sweep this week over Wilmington puts Merion squarely in 3rd place with a 2-point cushion over 4th place PCK. Merion also secured a spot in the top 6 and has equaled the number of courts won to date by Waynesborough. Wilmington has only secured a single point this year and looks like they will need a small miracle to pass all of the teams ahead of them to get into 10th or 9th place and have a chance to run with the big dogs for another season. Both teams will be tested next week as Merion takes on Wallingford and Wilmington hosts Waynesborough.

During a night where Picket Post was favored on 3 of the 4 courts, the Stoga squad pulled off upsets on Courts 2 and 3 and grabbed all three points in the process. The 3 points also now puts them a full point ahead of Picket Post and currently into 5th place and PP now moves into 6th place. Trevor and Eric took down A&A on court 1. On Court 2, Leo and Antonio lost the first set to Rodney and their newest member DeGrandpre but then turned things around and won the next two sets. On court 3, Tommy McAvoy and Doug won all 3 sets and the upset over Jimmy and Joe to secure the 3 points for Stoga. On Court 4 Matt and Tim won the court for PP to stop the sweep. PP has lost their last three matches and face P-Country next week.

Radley Run was a Sherlock underdog on all 4 courts, but that didn’t stop them from taking 2 points off of P-Country and now hold a 3 point lead in a safe 9th place over Concord. On Court 1, the Nowlan’s took care of business and secured court 1 off of Jaleel and Robert. On Court 2 Lonnie and Doug pulled off a 5.2 point upset over Hocker and Peter Hill. On Court 3, Nolan and Brian defeated Kurt and Bob. On court 4, Chris and Goody only dropped 4 games in their three-set win over Haggerty and Liedtke. Radley hopes to maintain their lead in 9th place this week as they take on PCK. If Concord is going to pick up some points, it will have to take down Martins Dam this week.

Martins Dam is down 2 courts this week to H-Valley as vacation schedules did not allow all 4 courts to get completed. Currently H-Valley has a 5 set to 1 lead with courts 2 and 3 left to play. Both teams are scrapping for points as MD needs points to get a spot into the top 6 and H-Valley is looking to get out of the bottom 3.

After almost 9 weeks completed, lets take a look back at Sherlock’s 11-week pre-season predictions.

Concord – 5 Points – (Currently has 6 points)
Radley Run – 8 Points – (Currently has 9 points)
