Week 1 is in the books for the D1 boys.

Thwack was the sound heard around the Philly and Delaware paddle tennis courts as the season opened up for the Thursday night players. For some, it could come soon enough and for others, they wish they had another month or so to hone their skills and prepare for the next 16 weeks.

We start off South of the boarder as the two Delawarean D1 teams went head to head at Greenville. Interestingly enough, the teams on three of the courts that won their first set dropped the next two sets for the evening. On court 1, Widemann and Ashley jumped out to take the first set but the duo of Simon and Marvin steadied their games and won the next two. DeJose and Mumford took all three sets on court 2 over Donaho and Fleming evening up the math for the night. Manning and Scott Harrison won the first set for the home crowd but they surrendered the lead and dropped the next two sets to Wilke and Miller. On Court 4, Dana and Rob Harrison pulled out a tough first set but they too dropped the next two sets to the newly appointed MMWAARC member Podolsky and Maroney sealing the 3 point win for the Wilmington squad. MMWAARC Podolsky after match stated “let that serve as notice to the rest of D1 that we plan on securing many of these “3 point” wins and look forward to taking down Huntingdon Valley next week.

The reigning champions Philly Cricket traveled to see the newly opening hut at Martins Dam and were not the greatest house guests as they took 3 of the 4 courts. On court 1, Falatek and Mcdonald took all 3 sets from Captain Dan and Aiden. Martin’s Packer and Pijawka took down the old school duo and 80’s favorites Hyde and Repdath. Tom Harris and Ritesh were able to win court 3 over the newly formed partnership of Jerry Bernie and Greg Donches in a three setter. Terry Adamson and Jeff Rexford were able to win all three sets off of Tim Farrell and the Dam’s new pro Steve Macgregor. Captain Dan went on to explain after the match “we are finally proud to show off our hut to the paddle community. No longer will players dread coming to the Dam. We also fully expect to be competing for the fourth play-off spot this year with Stoga!!”

After surviving last year’s huge scare with the significant chance of demotion to D2 last year, Aronimink started off their season with a trip to Philly Country. Model-T Reiniger made an appearance on court 1 with Pat “newlywed” Nolan against Captain Andy and Ben Scott. Pat and Reiniger were able to pull all 3 sets to secure the first court. Hocker teamed up with Pops Nolan on court 2 and they too were able to take all 3 sets from Drew Friel and Cliff McLaughlin. Peter Hill and Norm completed the courts 1-3 sweep for Philly Country as they were able tough 3 seter out of Boz and Haabestad.

Conestoga was happy to show off their new line up against Merion and test to see how it would hold up to the competition. Court 1 went well for Stoga as Trevor teamed up with Matt Kochis and they were able to take all 3 sets off Eger and Greg Frigerio. Court 2 also went well for Stoga as Eric Niessen and Antonio won fairly quickly and took all 3 sets off of Jeff Lyon and Townsend Morris only dropping 4 games during the contest. Court 3 was a battle but the newly recruiting duo of Tommy McAvoy and Rodney Stewart were able to take the first two sets off of Chris Bond and DJ Bozentka to secure their sweep of the first 3 sets. Merion was able to secure court 4 as Ben Faber and Paul Mirabello were able to defeat Jim Riley and Doug Knight

Wallingford started off the year down a court against Picket Post but somehow they were able to win 7 sets out of the other 9 to secure 2 points for the evening. Jeff “Monkey Lamp” Shrager teamed up with Mike McGrath to secure 3 of the necessary sets against Gottfried and Soule. Detiger and Parson were able to take court 2 in a tough 3 set battle over the new addition Ed Hughes and Ken Crowther. The set that Ed and Ken won proved to be pivotal at the end of the evening. Powell and Peichel were able to take all 3 sets on court 3 over Sedgwick and Harper giving Wallingford 2 points and Picket Post a point in the only match of the evening where the teams split courts.

Waynesborough was also set to debut their newly renovated hut against Huntingdon Valley. On court 1, WCC put out Vlatko and Captain Kake and they were able to take all 3 sets off Sean Seese and Chris Vanburen to start the evening. On Court 4, WCC had long time ago teammates Jim Ryan and Keith Studnick against Peter VanBuren and Alec Kissell. Peter and Alec dropped the 1st set but then took control of the match for the next two and won the court for HV. Court 2 was Steve Beers and Hank Oberly and they played a tough first set off of HV’s new pro Robbie Row and Tripp Davis before they were able to control the match for the last two sets. Tony and Geoff were able to win the first two sets over Fred Woll and Andrew Wilt which gave WCC three courts and three points for the evening.
