You are more than just a number To the MMWAARC

The MMWAARC is excited to announce that they have been working with Tenniscores.com and the Greater Boston Paddle Tennis League “GBPTL” over the summer. The goal between the three was to create a rating system for players solely dependent upon matches played that could be used by the league and captains to help administer the league. The future goal would be that this new rating formula would be used by all APTA leagues, which could create more competitive tournaments or matches between leagues, or possibly be used for the League National Championships.

The GBPTL has been using a rating system for a number of years utilizing another system, but last year converted all their players and began to use tenniscores.com. The ratings have been used by them to create very competitive tournaments and for league rulings with regards to stacking. The players have begun to appreciate the fact that the system works, and the stacking has all but been eliminated as the system removes most subjectivity.

MMWAARC has been working with tenniscores.com to modify the scoring system to account for differences in the two leagues. For example, we modified the system to exclude the third set scores in a league match if a team wins the first two sets to allow for a more social aspect of play that occurs frequently in these scenarios.

What will happen next

The tenniscores system will be posting the current rating for each player next to their names on their team’s pages. The score was arrived at based on the last two winter seasons of play and a very complicated formula to get the system started. Each new player needs to start with a rating and then their rating will move up or down based on the outcome of his matches, his partner, and their opponents’ ratings.

We have been reviewing the ratings based on the matches played for the last two years to ensure that our initial ratings gave us a good starting point and solicited input from a few players as well. Could there be individuals that are rated too high or low? Absolutely…. The system works best when there is plenty of data for that given player. If the player’s initial rating is incorrect, it could take a number of matches for that player’s rating to change to the appropriate rating.

How the rating system is going to be used for MAPTA League matches
1. This season will be a trial for future seasons as we get used to the system and how it functions. We also most likely will be tweaking the formulas that teniscores.com uses to ensure that it is creating ratings that reflect the outcome of the matches.

2. The MMWAARC will be establishing a rating for each line for each league to be used as a starting point for new players. We will also rely on the pros to ensure that the new players have an appropriate starting rating based on his ability relative to other players at his club or in the league.

3. The MMWAARC will be using the ratings as one of the bases for responding to stacking complaints. If you are a club rep and want your club to avoid losing a stacking complaint, you should ensure that your teams reasonably line up with the ratings for your club.

4. The ratings are not going to dictate how you create teams for the league, just which spot they play in for that evening.

5. MAPTA tournaments will also be used as input into the player’s ratings which will enable players to gain ratings points regardless of what team they play on during the season in their league matches.

i. The PA States, Super B, and Super C, Masters, The Amateur and other tournaments where most of the players are MAPTA members

6. The system has the ability to track a club’s ladder matches, club championships, as well as everyday matches that the players all agree to have rated.

7. The system has the ability to ignore matches in which it believes based on paper to be very lopsided. It will not help the stronger team to win 0, 0 , 0 vs 4, 4, 4 and ensure that the match can still be competitive and fun for all participants.

8. The system will keep track of all three sets. One of the factors is the percentage of games won and since these sets count towards many tie breakers, they will count for the player ratings.

9. Ratings are dynamic, and adjust after match results are posted. The Rating algorithm uses the match outcome (win/loss, and games won) and the relative strength of the teams to determine the adjustment. Winning/losing the match is the most important factor in determining a Rating change.

a. For example: Player A (a 20 Rating) and Player B (28) have a match versus Player C (24) and Player D (30). Team A/B has a rating of 48 vs. Team C/D’s 54. Team A/B has a lower Rating and is favored to win the match.

b. If Team A/B wins, this is the expected outcome. Ratings for A and B will decline a small amount; Ratings for C and D will increase by the opposite amount.

c. On the other hand, if Team C/D wins, this is an upset! Ratings for C and D will decline by a more significant amount while Ratings for A and B increase.

d. Large changes in Rating are achieved through upsets or lopsided victories between closely-matched teams. A heavily-favored team cannot improve its Rating by feasting on weak opponents.

Look, we know everyone is not going to like being rated or like their rating itself. Please bear with us as we promise to take your input to make the rating reflect the reality of matches played and the ultimate goal of the league is to have competitive matches in a social environment. The ratings could lead to future tournaments that will target a specific combined rating for those that are looking to play even more competitive paddle throughout the season.

As the league has grown over the years, the biggest issue that we have been facing is the constant complaints with regards to stacking (at all levels). The ratings should ultimately take away that issue and make the league easier to administer and allow it to flourish. In Boston, the ratings are used as a 100% fool proof way to eliminate stacking.
The rating works like a golf handicap - the lower the rating, the stronger the player. As of now, our best player based on the ranking is Vlatko and he has a rating of a minus 4 and our highest rating is 81.

Expect to see the ratings posted to the site before the season starts. If you see any significant issues based on your knowledge of the players, please contact your club pro or club rep who can work with the MMWAARC, but be patient as we figure out the best way to use this new tool.
