Who can run with the Big Dogs???

The D1 season was underway after the rain out in week 1. The teams are gearing up for the long haul as the 16-week regular season is a marathon and the teams that prove to be ready to start the season strong are not always part of the final 4 that can stake a claim into the finals.

Many changes have occurred since the last ball was struck in the D1 finals that saw Waynesborough claiming their first championship since 2014 over Philadelphia Cricket Club. Waynesborough finished up their season with out Captain Beers. It appears that Captain Beers will still not be available until the new year as he is rehabbing his injury sustained from last season. Everyone else is available to start the remainder of the season in their quest to repeat their championship run. Captain Beers stated, "These guys won the championship last year handily without me. Unless something goes down with our D2 squad, I see us repeating quite comfortably."

Philly Cricket, last years runners up, fell a few courts short in their efforts to repeat as champions last season. After their epic defeat of Wallingford in the semi-finals that came down to a few points in the last match they are finding themselves at least one man short as long-time captain Redpath sustained a lower body injury during the summer and is expected to miss the fist few weeks of the season. The rest of their squad should be returning and ready to claim a spot in the Top 6 at the break.

Wallingford’s loss in the semi-finals did not deter them from building a bigger an even stronger team for the 2018/19 season. They picked up long time journeyman paddler Steve Reiniger from Philadelphia Country Club. Although records have been hard to track, some historians believe that his may be his 5th D1 club that he will have played for. They also discovered that they not have only 1 but 2 diamonds in the rough that will be able to possibly strengthen their squad when called upon. In last years first ever D2 vs D1 challenge match Jeremy Loomis and Dusty Nelson played court 1 for Wallingford 2 and defeated the Nolans’ that ended in a third set tie-breaker. If they can keep their calendars straight, they are the heavy favorite to claim their first title since 2016. This years team motto is “Win it for Woody”.

Last years hottest new team has certainly predicted to cool off this season. This loss of Matt Kochis to D3 and the loss of Rodney Stewart to Picket Post could prove to be difficult for the squad over the next 16 weeks. Captain Trever seems unfazed by the loss of his top players on Courts 2 and 3. “Yeah, Losing Matty and Rodney is going to be difficult but our club’s motto has always been next man up. The Eagles won their first Super Bowl without their best player, we can certainly win this league down a couple of players. Matty just felt more comfortable joining his friends in D3 at Whitford and I can’t blame him, it was nice to have him in the biggs while the time lasted.”

Martins Dam is on of the clubs that looks to replace Conestoga in the playoffs this year. They are returning all of their team and with Conestoga’s big loss in player personnel, this could be their year. Captain Dan was stated, “It was a complete embarrassment for this squad last year, after the club committed to the multi-million McMansion hut to provide additional comfort for its top players that we didn’t even get a sniff of the play-offs. If we can’t finish in the Top 4 this season, I may finally hang up my paddle after 35 years in this league.”

Merion is another club that is looking to make an appearance into the play-offs after a long absence. They picked up the other Bozentka to create some additional impact on whatever court they put him on and his comforting presence in the hut before and after matches. Their youth movement is still in play as those youngsters have seen some big-time paddle for a few years and this may be the year it pays dividends and vault them into a Top 4 spot. With Eger surgically improved and also having Lyon as the second highest rated player in the league provides them with plenty of flexibility and depth.

Picket Posts addition of Rodney completely changes the complexion of this squad. Gottfried and Soule are looking to improve upon a very respectable 8 and 4 record on court 1 last year. Last years it couple of Ferry and Yen also held a 8 and 4 record last season and moving Rodney into the mix can create a team that will be competing with Martins and Merion for the final spot in the play-offs. Playing with the Stoga guys was fun last year, but this squads commitment to win is unbelievable stated new Head Pro, Rodney. Both squads have December 20th marked on their calendars with a big bulls eye as Stoga plays Picket Post which could prove to be a match that helps one of them into a play-off spot.

Wilmington suffered what could be a catastrophic loss of their #1 player Jeff to the D2 Aronimink team. This was a squad that way outperformed the Vegas line from last year as they were predicted to finish near the bottom but held on for an 8th place spot. We have heard the terms described as “Blood Bath” in what to expect out of the Wilmington squad unless they can get someone to replace Jeff and quick.

Philly Country defended their D1 position at the end of the year by defeating Wallingford and hope to ride that momentum and stay out of 10 place this season. They did lose Steve Reiniger to Wallingford but upon numerous interviews with the P-Country players, no one would go on record that he actually would be missed (either on or off the court). As harsh as that sounds, they did pick up another Pro Nolan from down under and most players are excited to see this youngster mature and possible move up to the 1st court in the near future.

Concord was so excited that after 5 years of hard work and numerous double jumps, they finally earned their way into D1. Then the bad news came that they too lost their number 1 player to an overseas move that he said was for family considerations. Funny how the stress of the players moving up to D1 can create moves out of the country rather than facing the onslaught of playing court 1 in D1 every week. They still have the two best Swede’s in the league as well as their new pro Jason who hope to mix it up with the other members and somehow hang on to a spot for next season. When asked, Captain Bill Dwyer explained, “We don’t want to be known as the best D2 team in MAPTA history. That is now what this squad is about. Its unfortunate that Nima moved out of the country shortly after we clinched a spot in D1 but we have moved on and look forward to finally playing as an underdog for the first time in 5 years.”

Radley Run has made their way back into D1 part Duex. Can this squad be in a 9th or better spot by the end of the season is anyone’s guess? They won’t necessarily line up as a favorite against many squads this season other than Wilmington and Concord but they will have to find a few upsets along the way if they want to run with the big dogs another year.

H-Valley finished just 1 point above Philly Country last year which was the 1 point they needed to stay out of the D1 vs D2 challenge match last season. They will need to step up again this season if they want to keep that 9th spot again this season as P-Country most definitely improved and these two are predicted to go down to the final week of the season again to see who can earn that 9th spot. Captain Fred although maybe in and out of the DL for the early part of the season, feels that his team has the depth and experience to pull off a few upsets. One of our biggest advantage is our home courts, we have heard rumors that some of the squads have trouble fielding their best duo’s due to the travel distance and we are totally prepared to take advantage of that.
