D1 - Week 3 in Review

Week 3 is now in the books for the D1 players. Has the schedule been providing a trick or a treat is anyone’s guess at this point as we have 4 teams that have won 2 of the 3 weeks, with three of them still undefeated, one team looking for their first win and the rest have picked up a single win.

The premier match of week had to include the match of the world beaters Falatek (Martins1) going up against Vlatko (Waynesborough). This week Captain Tom appeared to pull his players’ names out of a hat again and came up with Oberly playing with himself on line 3 against Jamie Stein and Tim Ferrel. This competitive match concluded with a victory for MD in 3 sets. Tim McAvoy teamed up with Steve “Suds” Beers and took all three sets over Carter and Tom Hermans. Geremy Connor and Keith Studnick got their call up to the bigs again and made the most of it dropping only 1 game against Pete Seneca and Mark Matje. It all came down to the two best players in the area pairing off against each other, Vlatko pairing with Scotty (The Kid) Safford and Falatek with Tim (The Experience) Brooke. After splitting sets, all eyes were wathing the third set as MD could pick up the all-important point with a victory. This time, youth won, as Scotty and Vlatty proved too much and completed the 3-point sweep for Waynesborough.

The undefeated Wallingford took on the winless P-Country this week with plenty of action anticipated on the top 2 courts. In what appears to be a lineup change at line 1 for Wallingford, Mike McGrath teamed up with Jeff Shrager and too all three sets over Pat and Patrick Nowlan. Fuman and Poletti paired up for Wallingford against Hocker and peter Hill on line 2 which saw the Wallingford duo winning the first two sets 7-6, 7-5 before dropping the third set 6-2. P Country did take court 4 and Norm and Steve Macgrefor took all 3 sets off Ken and Brennan. Hocker appears to be on the hot seat again this season as his team has only won a single point to date and was asked if the rumors were true whether he was going to manage a college team if an opening was present, “This team always has a slow start in the first half, and I have to figure out a way to fix that. Regarding the question if I am going to jump to a college team is NO.”

Conestoga also remains undefeated, this week taking down last year’s champions Pihlly Cricket. Trevor and Eric appear the team to beat this year on line 1 as they took down Redpath and Ritesh in straight sets. Line 2 also went to Stoga as Mazzerese and Fink took down the McDonald and Harris duo also in straight sets. P-Cricket took line 3 with Rexford and Gelrod winning all 3 over Riley and Havertine. This loss leaves P-Cricket only one point out of last place. Captain Bowser appears to be on the “Hocker Hot Seat” but his response was “we are just fine, whoever did the f’n schedule wanted to put a scare in us and it worked. I wouldn’t be surprised if this team does not run the table, the remaining 8 weeks.”

Picket Post took on Merion and secured 3 points winning courts 2, 3, and 4. Week 3 saw the return of the Fridge who teamed up with Jeff Lyon and took all three sets off of Captain Matt and David Hissey. Adam Gottfried and Jeff MacFarland took court 2 off of Jonathon Moyer and Brian Crochiere. Matt Davis and Bill Sedgwick proved from PP proved too tough and took down Dan Gallager and Chad Morrow. On court 4 Tim Parson and Justin Harper took all three sets off Tim Kent and Ed Saxman.

Greenville got their first victory of the season defeating Martins 2 in a tie breaker of sets. Simon and Todd took all 3 sets on court 1 over Pijawka and Packer to kick things off. Captain Dan and Jay Wright evened the score with a tough win over Donoho and Fleming taking 2 of the 3 sets. The Mark’s took their match over Berine and Nofer also taking 2 of 3 sets. It all came down to court 4 in which Doc Goldberg and Jim Small had secured the point for MD over Bob Harrison and Dana winning the first 2 sets.

Captain Rodney is back in his smoking jacket, this week celebrating his win with Dog over Overbrook’s Hall and Burt taking the first two sets with a score of 6-3 before dropping the third set 7-6. Captain Rodney later when on to state, “Doug and I are playing well and now just waiting to take on some of the better competition, Steve and Tom are always tough but…. You know….” H-Valley had plenty to celebrate as the took all 4 courts against last years’ finalists.

For those that have been asking, we will now report on some of our favorite D2 teams in the near future. This week we are happy to report that Aronimink has been making the most of their D2 experience by smashing the hopes and dreams of the rest the D2 league.
