Controversy mars what was an almost perfect The Amateur event held by MAPTA

The weather predictions called for some nasty rain storms for most of the day but that didn’t stop the 16 pioneering paddle teams from around the MAPTA region from signing up for the inaugural The Amateur Event. The morning started with the opening rounds beginning at 9AM at Waynesborough and Aronimink.

The Base Line Racket Sports ball by fellow MAPTA player Don Seavey was used for the first time in an official event and performed flawlessly during the morning dry matches. Many players did not recognize any discernible difference with the ball and some stated that they thought the ball had held up better during their match than traditional ball brands.

The tournament format was somewhat controversial as well as experimental in that all matches before the finals for every draw would be played with no ad scoring as well as a 10 point tie breaker if the teams split sets. In the finals, the no ad scoring was still used except that the third set would be played out. When asked about this new format, Tournament Director Keith Studnick stated “Our goal for the tournament was to complete 4 or 5 matches in one day. Everyone would play 2 matches and then all meet at WCC for lunch and then go back and play 1 or 2 more matches depending upon if they won their 3rd.” At the end of the day, most players seemed to appreciate the format as the no ad scoring changes the focus of the players for each point differently and the 10 point tie breaker allows for momentum swings similar to that of a full set”.

Dan Greenwood and Johan Hoegstedt held the #1 seed and Keith Studnick and Steve Beers were the #2 seed. Half of the matches of the unseeded teams tested the new format early as they went to third set tie-breakers with one of them going to 16-14. In the main draw, the seeds held on to form and both made it to the finals.

The back draws also featured many competitive matches and the champions were:
Consolation – Bond & Bozentka (Merion)
Consolation Reprieve – Seavey & Zegal (Chester Valley)
Quarter Final Reprieve – Raihall & Main (Radley Run)

After the mornings matches were complete, everyone joined up at Waynesborough for lunch in which they show cased their results of their hut improvement and were able to get their first taste of Twin Lakes Brewing’s choices thank to Geoff Veale and have also some snacks from TastyKake thanks to Paul Ridder. Cindy Prendergast and Stamford Screen Printing made some awesome shirts for all the players on a very limited budget and time line.

Everyone headed back out on the courts prior to the start of the afternoon matches to try to beat the rain but it came down in buckets for most of these semi-final matches. Don’s balls also came with an unknown feature in the rain in that they made line calling completely obvious to everyone on the court and watching. No line judges would ever be required as the balls left short lived marks on the courts to everyone’s amazement. This is something that Don recognizes is a problem and is working on with the ball manufacturer and did not occur when the courts were dry.

In the main draw both semi-final matches featured set scores of 3 & 1 with the #1 seed toppling VanBuren and Woll from Huntington Valley and the #2 seeds defeating Adams and Collins from Deerfield and Radley run in the wet conditions.

In the final, Studs and Suds jumped out to a first set victory playing flawless paddle but Dan and Johan turned the tide and took the 2nd set. The third set was played out with the #1 seeds proving to be the better team that afternoon and claiming the Championship. All bracket winners received a nice bottle of wine to be taken home with them for the Holidays and the players hung for many hours after the match trying their best to finish up the Twin Lakes beer, discussing Don’s balls and snacking on some TastyKakes at Waynesborough.

The controversy started during these hours after the completion of the match of whether Johan Hoegstedt should be declared ineligible for the tournament. Rumors were circulating around the hut that Johan was a former ATP tour tennis player and then should be declared ineligible by the tournament committee. According to an article found online that was titled “How is Johan Hoegstedt?”

This article was found In the University of Utah’s Website. “After graduating from the U, he traveled on tour with his brother Thomas earning himself a few ATP points in singles and doubles. He claims that his only professional claim to fame is that Thomas and he received a doubles wildcard at the Sydney Indoor Championships over then up and coming Australian junior Patrick Rafter. “Something Rafter reminds Thomas of every time they meet,” says Hoegstedt.” You can read the full article here.

https://utahmenstennis.com/2012/11/12/how-is-johan-hoegstedt/

The tournament committee had a lot to take in and overnight declared Dan and Johan as victors. According to Johan, he never made enough money to cover his expenses and therefore was a “Net” Amateur and no one was willing to take away the bottle of wine that Dan received.

Thanks to everyone that participated, Aronimink and Waynesborough for providing their courts and facilities, Don and Base Line Racket Sports for their balls, Twin Lakes and Geoff Veale for the awesome beer and TastyKake and Paul Ridder for the great snacks. MAPTA hopes to see everyone next year (except for maybe Johan ?) for “The Amateur” Part 2.
