2018/19 D1 predictions as seen by Watson

For the first time in MAPTA history, a computer will be making the D1 predictions solely based upon the new ratings program installed over the summer months after many hours of regression testing.

Although this highly controversial ratings program has been in use for many years in the Men’s Boston Paddle league, the MAPTA players have been slow to adopt and accept this new number that has been assigned to them. Many feel that the system is filled with flaws and that Real Studsy’s adversaries have been unfairly rated to the point they are thinking of leaving their paddles at home this winter and trying Pickleball or Ping Pong. The 10 guys that were each ranked with an 80+ rating have hired Judge Cavanaugh’s prior law firm to review if their constitutional rights have been violated and feel that MAPTA will be the first legal Monopoly in U.S. history to fail.

Nonetheless, despite the player’s hatred of the system and some legal disputes, the predictions must go on and below are the 2018/19 predictions for D1 for the first 11 weeks of the season as computed by the new ratings system.

Wilmington – 1 Point – For those that don’t remember last year’s human prediction, it was that Wilmington would have a total of 6pts and they would not make it to the 2018/19 season in D1. They actually ended up with 12 points at the split. Is the loss of Wiedemann to Aronimink worth 11 points? We will wait and see but with that bar set so low; most are going to take the over.

Concord – 5 Points – This squad has clawed its way to D1 in just 4 years barely dropping a point before they faced off in D2 last season. Why only 5pts? Could it be the loss of their top player and pro Nima? Or is the lack of respect for their replacement pro Jason? Either way, this team is not used to losing and considering the team has the two strongest Swedes in the league; most will take the over on this squad as well.

Radley Run – 8 Points – This team is giving it a second shot to run with the big dogs after spending last season in D2 in which they were crowned champions. Will they be the best D2 team next season or will they get out of the bottom 3 this season. Two seasons ago, the human also picked them to have 8 points but they actually had 10 points at the split. An upset or two and this team can definitely get out of the bottom 3.

Huntingdon Valley – 9 Points – HV is predicted right in the spot they would wish to be in but would also need a strong final 5 weeks post-split to keep their spot for another season. Last season, they had 11 points at the split.

Philly Country – 10 Points – Considering their loss of Steve Reiniger to Wallingford, the computer predicted that PCC would get only 1 point less than they got last season. Not sure what that says about Reiniger’s value but I guess we can see how much Wallingford improved or didn’t when the computer does their prediction. Considering only 2 points separate three teams for the 8th, 9th, and 10th spot, we expect this race at the bottom to be very exciting.

Conestoga – 18 Points – We had to clean our readers to make sure we saw this correctly. Stoga had 28 points at the split last season and the computer is predicting a 10 point drop in just one season. They did lose both Rodney Stewart and Matt Kochis during the off-season who had 24 combined wins which explains a lot. They did pick up UPenn’s Coach Geatz who has coached teams to numerous Big 10 and Ivy League Championships. You got to think he is not going to let this squad drop 10 points in just one short season.

Merion - 20 Points – The computer has predicted 5 more points than last season as it appears their combination of seasoned players and youth will finally vault this team to a Top 6 spot after a rather long absence. An extra win or two could even put them into the play-offs. They picked Mr. Hand Bozentka who will school this squad of Spicolli’s as well.

Philly Cricket – 21 Points – They are predicted to pretty much be where they were last year as they had 23 points at the split. They had a terrific finish to their season and they look to keep up their momentum into this season. The predictions are that they are going to be in a tight race with 3 other teams for the last two spots for the play-offs.

Martins Dam – 21 Points – They are getting mad respect from the computer as they are predicted to be in a tie with P-Cricket but pretty much be where they were last year at the split as they had 20 points. They ratings are not predicting many wins on courts 1 and 2 but their 3 and 4 court play are what’s going to get them into the last spot in the play-offs if they have a chance. An upset win for them on court 1 or 2 in some key matches could be the difference in locking in a third place finish.

Picket Post – 24 Points – Is Rodney Stewart really worth 9 points for the first 11 weeks. That is what the computer is predicting as PP had only 15 points last season at the split. The computer model is also predicting some very competitive matches with the likes of Wally World and Waynesborough and its not out of the possibility that they can finish in on of the top 2 spots.

Wallingford – 28 Points – They definitely still have a bad taste in their mouths with their loss to P-Cricket in the Semi-Finals. For some reason, they thought picking up the Ryan Fitzpatrick of MAPTA, Steve Reiniger would improve their squad. The good news was that according to the computer model is that they will pick up a total of 1 point from last season. At least they were not predicted to do worse with the Nova coach. Rumor has it that there is a 9 foot by 12 foot banner with the MAPTA League Schedule in the back of all of the courts on both sides to remind the players when it would be a good time to schedule their vacations….

Waynesborough – 32 Points – The reigning champions are predicted to sweep the league during the first 11 weeks. With the permanent loss of Bruce Sopko and Captain Beers not likely to be available before January, we think we found there might be a bug in the software. Vlatko’s -3.6 rating certainly puts a bullseye on Court 1 every week. There is a certain P-Cricket player that just laid a huge bet on the under 32 as he has stated he will quit paddle if Waynesborough sweeps the D1 league.

With that in mind, the matches are won on the courts and not inside some computer in North Carolina so everyone needs to get out on the courts and improve their ratings ?
